Coroner’s Inquests 1864 Cases

There were 110 cases in 1864, presented in seven sub-pages.

If you have anything worth leaving to your descendants then be clear and decisive well in time, and make your intentions known – Elizabeth Atkins did not do so, and the excitement caused by her indecision killed her anyway. It is doubtful that Mary Barnes had anything worth leaving to her descendants, dying in poverty in the centre of a wealthy city like Salisbury

Surely someone who lived and worked in the countryside must have known that a squirrel is infinitely more agile than a human when in the branches of a tree – apparently, John Hayward seemed to think the opposite, and fell 24 feet to prove the point.

The cynic in me finds it a little disturbing that an inquest on a patient of the Fisherton House Asylum – John Luscombe – could only bring forth the testimony of a keeper, a night-watch-man, and the assistant medical officer, all of whom were on the payroll of this private institution.

Joseph Shipway, a lad fourteen years old, was killed whilst riding a horse, but this horse was, ‘treading down some barley which was being put into a mow, when it slipped into a part imperfectly filled up,’ lost its footing and rolled four times upon the deceased.

The Coroner makes a pointed remark after the death by probable suffocation of baby William Brown in Trowbridge, finding it, “rather suspicious that the majority of these cases occurred between Saturday night and Sunday morning.” He presumably refers to the evils of drink?
