Coroner’s Inquests 1822 cases
There were 47 cases in 1822, presented in seven sub-pages.
In these far away days, it was customary for village folk to set up annual revels, which were often very crude, loud, drunken affairs, a throw-back to other times really. They were, however, very much connected to the individual settlement, and much would be made of outside interference, hence the grudge felt by the young men of Kington Langley when men from Chippenham came and caused some trouble. They were set on revenge, and forty of them turned up one night in Chippenham armed with bludgeons, attacking whoever showed before them, completely indiscriminate – thirty-one were injured, and two killed, James Reynolds and Joseph Hull. Such would seem to be in the English character.
