Coroner’s Inquests 1845 cases
There were 125 cases in 1845, presented in eight sub-pages.
Many of the cases this year fall into the usual and predictable categories, and one notes again that a child like William Watson, twelve years of age, was put in sole charge of a horse-drawn wagon loaded with coal for an evening journey.
A little window is opened on the maintenance of Salisbury Cathedral by the death of Edward Woodyear, a clock and watch-maker of that city, who had the care of the C14th clock in the tower, and, in order to wind up the clock, had to ascend as far as the tower, locking the doors behind him, which made access for rescue difficult when he failed to come out again.
When four-year-old Richard Shears took fire from his night clothes igniting, his father applied to the Winterslow relieving officer for an order to go to the doctor, but was refused due to his not actually living in the parish – needless to say that the child died in agonising pain before he could be admitted to the Infirmary in Salisbury.
