Coroner’s Inquests 1835 cases

There were 56 cases in 1835, presented in four sub-pages.

There are few notable or exceptional cases this year, but that of Joseph Stokes shines a light on poverty, not so much on the poor as on the pressures exerted on those who supposedly helped the poor. He was faced with the prospect of following-up defaulters on the poor law and seeing his own accounts audited – was he too kind or too cruel? Unable to face this examination he killed himself in a most gruesome manner, not in his own home but in his local inn.

Edwin Burfitt was one of three lads who sneaked into the Cathedral Close – who knows where the Close constable was – and proceeded to climb one of the elm trees on the walk through the churchyard to the North Porch, to rob the rooks nests therein.

What Would You Have Done? A question we can often pose ourselves regarding some of these cases, but in that of Alfred Melson, it is pertinent. He was a servant, and rose in the night in response to noises, eventually going out the house door, where his master, from an upstairs window, shot him in the leg, from which he eventually died.

I was put in mind of the Keystone Cops or Will Hay, Moore Marriott and Graham Moffatt in the film ‘Where’s That Fire?’ when I read of Richard Stone, who was run over by the fire engine he was riding upon to quash a rick fire at Britford near Salisbury. The one horse was pulling the engine, which was carrying twenty men!
