1905 August 25th       Remarkable Accident in Castle Street

As the Mayor and Mayoress were stepping onto the crossing from Castle Street to Wyndham Road, on Sunday evening, en route for St Mark’s church, they were knocked down by some military cyclists, who were carelessly riding in the road. Mr and Mrs Dowden were severely shaken by the unexpected upset, and the Mayors’ arm was so painfully bruised and strained that he was obliged to return home, but he has since practically recovered from the accident. The Mayoress is also now none the worse for the mishap. Both may well be congratulated on their escape from a more serious injury.
