1900 July 27th     Shocking Accident to a Lad

On Sunday morning after attending service at St Martins Church a number of youngsters were playing about the churchyard. Amongst them was a little lad named Benger, the twelve year old son of Mrs Benger, of Witts Court, Gigant Street. He apparently climbed into a tree after a birds’ nest, and by some mishap he fell upon the fence below. The fence is composed of iron rods about five feet high, set about four inches apart and all sharply pointed. One of these dangerous spikes penetrated the little fellows armpit and passed out at the shoulder. A brother of the lad, two years older, pluckily released the sufferer who with assistance was taken home, and later on to the Infirmary, which he reached in a critical condition. His wounds were skilfully treated and he is progressing favourably.
