Three Glow Worms Equal One Candle

At the Winchester County Bench on Saturday, Mr G F Johns was charged with cycling without a light at 9.35pm on Saturday evening. It appeared that PC Bowering stopped defendant and asked him where his light was. He replied “Here it is,” producing a glass jar containing three glow worms, which he was using for testing purposes.

The defendant now told the Bench that the light of three glow worms was equal to a candle. Mr Woodham, the magistrates clerk, referred to the Act, which stated that a “lamp” should be attached to the cycle, and the scientific wheeler was ordered to pay the costs, 9s.
