Australian Sergeant Killed at Fovant

The Coroner for South Wilts (Mr F Trethowan) held an inquest at Fovant Military Hospital on Wednesday in connection with the death of an Australian Sergeant named Thomas Gladstone Simpson, aged 37, who was killed as the result of a horse running away and the cart, to which it was attached, overturning.

William Thomas Gordon Morrison, a driver in the Australian ASC, said he was with Simpson who was driving. The horse was reported to have a very hard mouth, and it “jibbed.” Simpson got it to go, but coming down a hill it felt the weight of the vehicle behind it and bolted. He took one rein from Simpson and pulled the horse into the near bank. The cart overturned and they were both thrown out and he lost consciousness.

A Captain in the RAMC said that Simpson’s skull was fractured at the base.

A verdict of accidental death was returned.
