Landing in the Dark

While a Handley-Page machine was landing just after midnight on Friday at a local aerodrome, Second-Private Joseph James Hopkinson, who was near a flare, thought the machine was coming towards him as it “taxied,” and in endeavouring to get away ran in the direction of the aeroplane and received fatal injuries.

At the inquest, which was held by the South Wilts Coroner (Mr F H Trethowan) at Fargo Military Hospital on Tuesday, Second-Private Kirkland said that Hopkinson was 46 years of age and came from Hull, and stated that if he had stayed by the flare he would have been all right.

Capt Wilson, RAMC, said Hopkinson had double fracture of two ribs, but no fracture of the spine. He developed pneumonia and died from his injuries on Sunday.

The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
