Smith, Alice         1887 October 29th                 Warminster

A terrible case of suicide was on Friday investigated by Mr Coroner Sylvester, at the Cottage Hospital. The deceased was a young woman named Alice Smith, daughter of Mr J Smith, photographer, who was found on the railway the previous night with both legs cut off. She died soon after her removal to the hospital. Deceased had been in a state of despondency for some time past, and had been watched by her friends.

On Thursday evening she went for a walk with her sister, whom, however, she managed to elude. Search parties were instituted, and about 12 o’clock deceased was found lying at the foot of the embankment nearly half a mile from the station. On the approach of the search party with lanterns, she called out, “Here I am.” She was perfectly conscious, and expressed her sorrow for what she had done. A verdict of suicide whilst in a state of temporary insanity was returned.
