Sudden Death at Holt

On Monday the Coroner (Mr F T Sylvester) held an inquest at the cottage of James Harford on the body of Frederick Smart, aged 55, employed at Messrs Beaven’s tanyard. On Friday the deceased was well enough, was seen standing at his garden gate, and afterwards retired to rest. He was a widower, and lived by himself.

Next morning his next door neighbour, Mrs Harford, went to prepare his breakfast, and found the door fastened. She burst it open, and found him dead in bed.

Dr Day-Lovell, who examined the body, said the cause of death was fatal syncope from failure of the heart’s action.
