Holland, Mary          1886 November 13th

Yesterday (Thursday) an inquest was held at the Council Chamber before Mr G Smith, on the body of Mary Jane Holland. The evidence of the deceased’s husband, who lives in the Green-croft, was to the effect that on Tuesday evening the deceased retired to bed with her daughter and he went up afterwards. He slept in the same room but not in the same bed. The next morning he got up and called his wife, who made no answer, and on going to the bed he found that she was dead.

The jury returned a verdict of “Death from natural causes.” They added a rider that the room was unfit for habitation on account of its smallness, and they recommended the Sanitary Authority to condemn it.
