Gill, William 1886 September 18th Bishopstoke
Mr Spencer Clarke, county coroner, held an inquest on Friday evening, at the Royal Hants County Hospital, Winchester, respecting the death of William David Gill, aged 19, an employee of the London and South Western Railway Company, who was fatally injured while following his occupation at Bishopstoke Station on the morning of the 8th inst. Inspector Hoskinson, of Southampton, was present on behalf of the company.
It seems that some carriages were being shunted, and that deceased – whose duty it was to examine the brakes – got between the buffers and was crushed. He was taken to the hospital where it was found that three of his ribs were broken and he was gradually suffering from hemorrhage of the lungs. He was unconscious and died from his injuries the same evening.
A verdict of “Accidental Death” was returned.
