Player, Henry

Player, Henry       1885 July 18th      Westbury

An inquest was held on Friday afternoon at the White Lion inn on the body of Henry James Player, aged two years, son of Thomas Player, residing at the house of the Town mill, who was found drowned in the mill pond adjoining on Wednesday last.

Sarah Player, the mother, stated that on Wednesday afternoon she went upstairs, leaving the child playing in the back kitchen, which is only a few yards from the pond. She stayed there a few minutes, and on coming down could not find the child anywhere, but found his hat floating on the water. She raised an alarm, and Gideon Giles (miller) and Thomas Compton, who were near, came to her assistance, and after about five minutes search found the body on the opposite side of the pond.

Dr Shorland used every effort to restore animation, but life was found to be extinct. The jury returned a verdict of “Accidentally Drowned in the Town mill-pond on the 8th instant,” and recommended that a fence should be put round the pond to prevent the recurrence of an accident of that kind.
