Shears, Francis

Shears, Francis            1884 April 12th              Winterslow

On Thursday morning an inquest was held at the Salisbury Infirmary, on the body of a child named Shears, son of a gamekeeper living at Winterslow. From the evidence of the mother, it appeared that the child Francis (aged about eight months) was being dressed on Sunday morning, when it started and fell out of her lap on to the floor. Either the child in falling, or the mother in trying to save it, upset a saucepan containing some meat and boiling water. A quantity of the water fell upon the child, who was considerably scalded. As soon as possible, the child was taken to the Infirmary, where it died from the effects on Tuesday night. A verdict of “Accidental Death” was returned.
