Peck, Jane

Peck, Jane         1884 February 2nd             Pewsey

An inquest was held on Thursday at the Police Station, before Mr Coroner Sylvester, on the body of Jane Peck, a widow, aged 52 years, residing with her two sons on Pewsey down. From the evidence adduced it seems that the deceased had gone into Pewsey to do some shopping, and, not returning at the usual hour, the sons assumed that she had remained in consequence of the storm. As she did not return the next morning a search was made, and she was found lying dead by the side of the road about a mile from her cottage, with a shawl over her head and a basket containing groceries by her side. She had been seen sitting by the roadside during the storm about a mile from where she was found. The medical evidence was to the effect that death was due to exposure, and a verdict to that effect was returned.
