Axford, Mary

Axford, Mary       1883 December 29th        Burcombe

An inquest was held here yesterday (Friday) by Mr R A Wilson, on the body of Mary Ann Axford, aged 55 years, the wife of John Axford, a shepherd residing here.

From the evidence it appeared that at about 8 o’clock on Wednesday night the deceased and her family were sitting together. She got up to go into the pantry and on coming back she went towards the oven. Turning back she fell into a chair near and expired immediately. She had been ailing for some time past and had had fainting attacks before and also suffered from a weak heart.

Mr Straton, surgeon, of Wilton, stated that he knew the deceased and had attended her professionally about six months ago when she was suffering from a fainting attack from a weak heart. He had no doubt but that her death was due to syncope from disease of the heart. The jury returned a verdict accordingly.
