Eldridge, John

Eldridge, John         1869 January 30th            Redlynch

An inquest was held by Mr Wilson, on the 26th inst., on the body of John Eldridge, aged 77 years. It appeared from the evidence of a neighbour, that on Friday, deceased was sitting by the fire, in his cottage, his wife being ill upstairs. About half past six o’clock he was found lying on the floor, with his clothes on fire, which some of the neighbours extinguished as quickly as possible, but not before he was badly burnt on the left side. Mr Caesar was sent for and came immediately, and attended him to the time of his death, which took place on Monday. Mr Caesar was of opinion that death was occasioned more from a shock to the nervous system than by the burns. Deceased never explained how the accident occurred. Verdict accordingly.
