Down, Mary 1869 March 6th South Newton
On Monday last, an inquest was held on the body of Mary Ann Down, a child five years of age. On Saturday the mother of the deceased went to Grovely, and during her absence the child fell into a tank in a yard where she was at play with her little brother. She was taken out by a man who was working near, and handed over to her mother, who took her home, and placed her in a warm bath. The child was insensible when taken from the tank, but became sensible about an hour and a half afterwards. Dr Bennett’s assistant went to see her, and said the mother had acted rightly. While the mother was gone to Wilton for medicine, the child died, and Dr Bennett attributed death to the shock occasioned to the system by immersion in the tank. A verdict of “Accidental death” was returned by the jury.
