Lodge, Elizabeth 1868 May 27th Bishopstone
On Tuesday morning an inquest was held here by R M Wilson, Esq., on view of the body of Elizabeth lodge, 78 years of age, who was found dead in a well on Monday morning.
John Emm deposed that the deceased was his wife’s mother, and that she had been feeble and bedridden for the last eleven months. Early on Monday morning she was missed from her bed. On going in search for her, he found the well cover open, and on looking down saw the body of he deceased in the water. Assistance was obtained, and the body was taken out.
Mr Flower, surgeon, of Coombe, was sent for, but life was extinct. It was evident that deceased had thrown herself down the well, while labouring under a fit of insanity, and a verdict was returned accordingly.
