Burt, Florence 1868 October 24th Berwick St –
An inquest was held by Mr Cardell (deputy coroner) on the 22nd inst., on the body of Florence Mary Burt, aged 6 months, the daughter of Joseph Burt, blacksmith. It appeared that Burt and his wife and child and a woman named Jane Abbott, were returning from Salisbury Fair in a trap on Tuesday evening. The night was very dark, and on arriving at Berwick the horse shied, pulled the trap against the wall, and upset it and they were all thrown out. The child died about a quarter of an hour afterwards from the injuries received. Jane Abbott had her arm broken, but neither Burt nor his wife were every seriously injured. Mr Thompson, of Donhead, was called, and he found the child’s death was occasioned by a fracture of the skull. A verdict of accidental death was returned.
